Hey there!

I am Birte, an Assistant Professor of Economics at Bard College, New York. I hold a PhD in economics from the New School for Social Research and master’s degrees in both economics and philosophy. As an ecological economist, my research focuses on linking social and ecological perspectives, especially around questions on labor. In the past, I have published on feminist ecological economics, degrowth and philosophy of (plural) economics.

Since 2024, I’ve been moreover pursuing a second PhD in philosophy at the New School (currently on leave). As a philosopher, I am particularly interested in early Frankfurt School critiques of the economy, and in exploring Degrowth as a Critical Theory of the economy.

In my free time, I play foosball competitively, and I like to sing, roller skate, and run.
